DRUGS THAT WE TAKE IN DREAMS

Drugs that we take in dreams
Do nothing to slow or accelerate the sun.
Girls that we kiss in our fantasies
Bear us no babies.
Dragons we kill without video
Win us no plaudits.
("Show us the head!")
Conceptual helicopters
Can skip air traffic control.
The rehearsed divorce
Still leaves us, for the moment,
Married.
The bomb that fell on Hiroshima,
Plummeting, planned
Retirements for millennia.
I have made plans myself,
Plans for the high window,
For the wheels of the passing train,
But plans per se are not the actuality.
And I ...
My teeth still beg the homage of the toothbrush.
My tax pack is still, annually, in the mail.
